For a lot of Boomers and Gen X folks (and even us millennials), the thumbs-up is just a quick, friendly “got it,” “cool,” or “approved”—super straightforward and efficient.
But zoom in on Gen Z, and suddenly it’s sparking all kinds of feelings. Some younger people straight-up find it unsettling or passive-aggressive, especially in work chats like Microsoft Teams. One person who recently started their first “real” job shared something like this: They noticed older colleagues reacting with thumbs-up all the time, but it felt off to them—cold, abrupt, or like it was ending the conversation without warmth. They’d rather drop a heart reaction or type out a quick “Thanks!” or “Great!”
It’s that classic generational shift: What feels polite and low-key to one group can come across as dismissive or sarcastic to another. Emojis are basically evolving language, right? Context, who you’re talking to, and even the app change everything.
I’m team thumbs-up for quick acknowledgments, but now I’m wondering if I’m accidentally sending bad vibes 😂. What do you think—does the thumbs-up still feel positive to you, or has it turned shady in your world? Or are you switching to hearts and words too?
People are chiming in on this emoji drama, and it’s spot-on how one little symbol can land so differently!
One person (24 years old) put it like this: For a lot of younger folks, the thumbs-up often comes off as pretty passive-aggressive—like it’s a quick, sarcastic “yeah whatever” instead of real approval. Someone else jumped in and said it probably feels off because it’s just so impersonal, especially if you’re the type who likes more heartfelt or detailed responses (hearts, “Great job!”, or even those extra exclamation points for warmth 😄).
It’s that classic cross-gen thing: What feels like a simple “got it” or “cool” to many of us older crowd can read as abrupt or dismissive to Gen Z in chats, especially work ones like Teams. Emojis are basically mini-language now—they shift with who’s using them and the vibe of the convo.
What do you make of this whole emoji evolution? Still team thumbs-up for quick replies, or have you switched to hearts/words to keep things feeling genuine? Or maybe you’re in the middle?
