Have you ever stopped to think about how long men actually want sex and foreplay to last? It turns out there are some clear patterns, and the answers may challenge a few common assumptions.Based on how sex is often shown in adult films or pop culture, you might assume men want sessions that go on for an hour or more without stopping.

In reality, that idea does not line up very well with what people report wanting in real-life relationships.

GQ explored the topic by speaking to a small group of women and non-binary people about their bedroom habits, finding that five to ten minutes of penetrative sex felt ideal, along with around ten to fifteen minutes of foreplay.

 
 

While research often suggests men have a higher sex drive than women, that does not automatically mean they want sex to last for long stretches of time.

Despite differences in desire, it seems both men and women tend to agree more than expected when it comes to how long sex should last.

A study from 2004 found that men preferred to spend about 18 minutes total on intercourse and foreplay combined, according to Sex and Psychology.

The same research, which looked at 152 heterosexual couples in Canada, showed that women preferred intercourse to last around 14 minutes and foreplay to last about 19 minutes, suggesting their preferences were not far apart.

However, these ideal timings did not always match reality, as participants believed sex typically lasts somewhere between 18 and 21 minutes overall.

You know what that means for most couples.Elsewhere, a relationship expert has also shared insight into what she believes is a healthy and realistic amount of time to spend on foreplay.

Speaking to Metro, certified sex and relationship coach Gemma Nice explained: “Men can usually climax in around 5-7 minutes, whereas it typically takes a female anywhere between 20-30 minutes.”

Keeping that difference in mind, Nice suggested couples aim for a middle ground and spend around 15 to 20 minutes warming up together. She also noted that spending more time on foreplay can have added benefits.

“When your body is in a state of calm, the blood can then flow from the heart, lungs and brain and move down to the genitals, allowing the 10,000+ nerve endings there to be activated. This can then give a better overall sexual satisfaction to both partners.”
