It is not easy to imagine how most people would react if their dad started dating a global pop icon like Katy Perry.
That is why many were curious to hear from former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s son after the relationship became public in December. This week, 18-year-old Xavier shared his thoughts for the first time.
The young adult, who was born the same year that 41-year-old Perry broke out with her hit I Kissed a Girl, explained how the singer has made an effort to connect with him as her relationship with his father continues to grow.
Xavier gave this rare glimpse into his father’s personal life during an Instagram collaboration with influencer Hob G. The two spoke openly while promoting McDonald’s and Drake’s new “Afters Meal” partnership.
While sipping blue raspberry Nite Sprite and eating McDonald’s poutine, Xavier shared that he genuinely likes Perry.
At one point, Hob brought up what he called the “elephant in the room,” referring to Trudeau’s relationship with one of the biggest pop stars in the world.
Xavier confirmed that he has met Perry and that they had a long conversation together.
“She’s cool, she’s nice,” he said in the promotional video. The aspiring musician also revealed that he received advice from the artist, who has sold around 151 million records worldwide since her rise to fame in 2007.
“We talked for hours, talking about my music. She gave me advice and next steps for me and stuff,” he added.
Instead of viewing Perry in a negative light, Xavier appears to see her as someone he can learn from.
The past few years have likely been a major shift for him. His father stepped down from office in March 2025, and only a few months later began dating one of the most recognized names in pop music.
On July 28, Trudeau and Perry were seen having dinner at what TMZ described as a “swanky restaurant in Montreal.” This came just weeks after Perry finalized her split from actor Orlando Bloom, ending their nine-year relationship.
Perry later confirmed in December that she and Trudeau were officially together. She shared that he had joined her for at least the Tokyo leg of her “Lifetimes” world tour.
Alongside photos of sumo wrestlers and Japanese pancakes, Perry posted images of the pair enjoying time together, captioned “Tokyo times on tour and more ( ◠‿◠ ).”
While the relationship may seem intense or sudden from the outside, a source told People that Trudeau’s persistence played a key role. They said: “The only reason this turned into something real is because Justin has been so persistent.”
“She wasn’t looking to date when they first hung out and she certainly wasn’t looking for a boyfriend.”
