Man Stunned After Finding Video Of Himself And Girlfriend On Porn Site As Hotel Spy Cam Scheme Uncovered

Hidden cameras in hotel rooms have turned thousands of guests into unwitting subjects of adult videos

A man who had spent years watching adult videos filmed without consent was horrified when he suddenly recognized himself and his girlfriend in one of the clips.

Using the name Eric, he admitted he had become a frequent viewer of Telegram channels that shared videos and livestreams secretly recorded inside hotel rooms, exposing private moments to thousands of strangers.

However, just three weeks after staying at a hotel in Shenzhen, China, with his girlfriend Emily in 2023, Eric noticed a video showing a couple entering a room he instantly recognized. In that moment, he realized he had gone from spectator to victim.

Eric’s case came to light during an investigation by the BBC’s Global China Unit, which uncovered tiny hidden cameras, some no larger than the tip of a pencil, secretly installed in hotel rooms and used to create thousands of non-consensual videos.

The investigation showed that these voyeuristic recordings have been an ongoing problem in cities across China for more than ten years.

With the rise of messaging apps and social media platforms, the content now reaches a much wider audience. This is happening despite pornography being illegal in China, a law that appears to do little to deter those running the operation.

In response, many residents, most of them women, have started sharing safety tips online. Some explain how to spot hidden pinhole cameras, while others go as far as setting up tents inside hotel rooms to block potential surveillance.

Despite laws requiring hotel staff to inspect rooms for hidden devices, this invasive and illegal practice continues.

Now in his 30s, Eric says he has stopped watching the videos altogether. He explained that when he first encountered the content as a teenager, it stood out because it felt more real than traditional adult material.

He told the BBC: “What drew me in is the fact that the people don’t know they’re being filmed. I think traditional porn feels very staged, very fake.”

When Eric told his girlfriend that they had been recorded during their stay in Shenzhen, she initially thought he was joking. That changed once she saw the video.

Eric then had to explain how he found the footage through a private Telegram channel. Emily was deeply distressed by the idea that the video had been publicly available. The couple did not speak for weeks afterward.

Sadly, their experience is far from rare. Investigators found that hidden hotel camera footage has become a business, with one seller known as AKA charging viewers a monthly fee of $65 to access the material.

One Telegram channel promoting these videos had around 10,000 users watching at the same time, with many leaving comments during livestreams and using extreme misogynistic language toward the women whose privacy was violated.
