The Lombardy region’s governor has confirmed that athletes in the Olympic Village are given free condoms
The Winter Olympics are now in full swing in Italy, bringing the usual mix of competition, medals, and national pride. Alongside the sporting action, another topic has started to grab attention: safe sex at the Olympic Village.
Just a few days into the Games, it seems that headlines about athletes’ personal lives are competing with the results on the slopes and ice. Conversations about relationships and off-field drama have been almost as common as medal updates.
So far, Team USA’s Breezy Johnson got engaged at the base of the super-G ski run in Cortina D’Ampezzo. Meanwhile, Norwegian athlete Sturla Holm Lægreid admitted during a live broadcast that he had cheated on his girlfriend before the Games began. And now, another story has added to the mix.
According to reports, it took only three days for the Olympic Village to run out of its supply of free condoms. Organizers were then said to be scrambling to restock for athletes staying at the facility.

The story was first reported by Italian newspaper La Stampa. The outlet quoted an anonymous athlete who said: “The supplies ran out in just three days. They promised us more will arrive, but who knows when.”
Attilio Fontana, the governor of the Lombardy region, has previously confirmed that free condoms are made available to athletes in the Olympic Village as part of standard practice.
In a message shared online, he explained: “If this seems strange to some, they’re unaware of the established Olympic practice. It began in Seoul 1988 to raise awareness among athletes and young people about sexually transmitted disease prevention— a topic that shouldn’t cause embarrassment.”
While it might be easy to assume that athletes rushed back to their rooms after competing, reports suggest the issue may have been linked to limited supply from the start.
La Stampa claimed that organizers were not “particularly generous with the numbers.” The newspaper noted that during the 2024 Olympics in Paris, around 300,000 condoms were distributed. That worked out to about two per athlete per day. In contrast, the Winter Olympics reportedly had “not even 10,000” available.
There are fewer athletes at the Winter Olympics, with just under 3,000 competitors compared to the 10,500 who took part in Paris. However, that lower number does not appear to have reduced demand in the village.

Roughly 1,500 men are competing at the Winter Olympics. Based on the reported supply, that would amount to about six condoms per person, and those were used within three days. That figure also does not account for athletes who may not be sexually active during the Games due to relationships or personal choice.
Even so, life at the Olympic Village is not limited to socializing. Athletes spend much of their time training, preparing for events that could define their careers, and recovering between competitions. The village also offers games, musical instruments, and catering facilities to help competitors relax and focus outside of their events.
